Free Teaching Resources
Welcome to my page designed to share free teaching resources, some of which I've created and some created by other experts in the communication and/or teaching fields.

Assessment of Your Comfort With Working in Groups...
This free online assessment assesses how comfortable or uncomfortable you are with working in groups.
Free Online Personality Test
This free online assessment (the DISC assessment) helps determine your work style based on various self-reported aspects of your personality. The US Chamber of Commerce website states, "It doesn't measure intelligence or aptitude. Instead, it looks at indicators like how you respond to challenges and how well you work with others. You can use the DiSC assessment as a personal assessment, and workplaces can use it to improve team performance."
Communicating Across Difference
This section focuses on resources to aid with communicating with others.
Begin by clicking on the red video icon to watch this 12-minute YouTube video of Dr. Suess's "The Sneeetches."
Our natural brain biology creates unconscious biases that have given humans instinctive benefits as a species. Unfortunately, those biases can harm us in modern society. Fortunately, however, we can work to overcome those harms. Click on the pink video icon to access a TEDx talk to learn more.
Intercultural and Cross-Cultural Competence Resources
The first resource is a lesson plan to teach students about the history and meaning of the Juneteenth holiday. Click on the Rubik's Cube icon to access these materials.
The second resource is a comparison tool to determine how a variety of beliefs and communication styles compare between and among different countries. It's based on research by Geert Hofstede (1980), which is fully discussed and linked in the following resource: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2021.662604/full

Click on the planet icon to access Hofstede's cultural comparison tool.
The third resource links to Harvard's Implicit Associations Tests (IATs), which help each individual discern more about the unknown biases we may have regarding a variety of human traits. Click on the eyeball icon to learn more about these self-assessments and decide whether you would like to find out more about how unknown, but inevitable, human biases may be impacting your own relationships, both personally and professionally.
Political Values, Attitudes, and Beliefs
The Pew Research Center has created a quiz to help you figure out where you land in comparison with other people (in the US, anyway) in terms of your beliefs and values regarding a variety of controversial public issues. Learn more by clicking on the gift package icon.
Researcher Jonathon Haidt discusses the moral roots of political differences. To learn more, click on the yellow video icon, which accesses his TED talk about his research.
To help students understand the individual nature of our interpretations of reality, I wrote an article in the journal "Communication Teacher" to share a teaching tool I call the "Political Autobiography" with other instructors or communication professionals. In some cases, you may be able to access the full-text article by clicking on the apple icon. If you have questions about the activity or if you would like a copy of the updated assignment description (the "Attitude Autobiography"), please feel free to contact me at karla.hunter@sdstate.edu.
